Koala is a free app made by David Stanete, an independent developer based in Spain (“I”, “me”). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use Koala.
The short version: Koala does not collect any personal data. There is no account, no server of mine and no tracking. What you enter stays on your phone and, if you keep iCloud sync on, in your own iCloud.
What Koala stores
Your goals, the sessions you log, your belt, your reminder days and time, and your appearance setting. If you add a weight goal to a competition, also that goal and your logged weights. This information is stored on your device, inside the app. It is never sent to me.
iCloud sync
If iCloud sync is on (it is by default when you are signed in to iCloud), Koala keeps a copy of this information in your private iCloud storage, so it comes back if you reinstall Koala or move to a new iPhone. It is stored in your own iCloud account under Apple’s privacy policy. I cannot see or access it. You can turn iCloud sync off in Koala’s Settings at any time.
What Koala does not do
Koala does not run its own servers or use analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services. It does not track you across other apps or websites. It does not access your location, contacts or camera. It never reads your photos: it only adds your goal card to them when you tap Save to Photos. It reads Apple Health only if you turn that on, for sleep or for a weight goal. It does not sell, rent or share any data, because it has none to share.
Reminders
Reminders are scheduled on your device using the system’s local notifications. Koala asks for permission first. You can turn them off in Koala’s Settings or in your phone’s settings at any time.
Apple Health (optional)
If you turn on Apple Health, Koala asks your permission to read how long you sleep, and shows it on Home. If you also add a weight goal to a competition, it asks to read your body weight. It reads only these and never writes to Health. On Android, Koala does the same with Health Connect. The readings stay on your device (and in your own iCloud with the rest of your data, if iCloud sync is on). They are never sent to me or to anyone else, and they are not used for advertising or analytics. You can turn Apple Health off in Koala, or take back access in the Health settings on your iPhone.
Sharing a goal
When you tap Instagram on the share screen, Koala creates an image of your goal card on your device and hands it to Instagram. When you tap Save to Photos, it adds that image to your photos; Koala asks for permission first, and only to add, never to read. Nothing is shared or saved unless you tap. Once shared, that app’s own privacy policy applies (for example, Instagram’s).
Exporting and importing your data
Export my data creates a file on your device and opens the system share sheet. You decide where the file goes. Import data reads a file you pick on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Device backups
On Android, and on iPhone with iCloud sync off, your phone’s normal backups to Google or iCloud may include Koala’s data. Apple and Google handle these backups under their own policies and your settings. I have no access to them.
Feedback by email
If you send feedback by email, I receive your email address and whatever you write. I use it only to reply and to improve Koala. I don’t share it with anyone, and I delete it if you ask. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in answering your message.
Deleting your data
Settings → Delete all data removes everything from your device and from your iCloud immediately. Deleting the app removes the data on your device; the copy in your iCloud stays until you use Delete all data or remove it in your iPhone’s iCloud settings.
Children
Koala is not directed at children under 13 and does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Your rights
Under the GDPR and similar laws you have the right to access, correct, delete and port your personal data, and to object to its use. Because Koala keeps your data on your device, you control it directly. For anything you have sent me by email, contact me at the address below. You can also complain to the Spanish data protection authority (Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, aepd.es) or the authority in your country.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, I will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will be mentioned in the app.
